THE BALTIMORE JAZZ TRIO
2002
1952
The Baltimore Jazz Trio plays ragtime, New
Orleans jazz,
blues and swing. We are concerned with the roots of jazz music. We
respect
the unique voice and manner of each style. In the jazz tradition, we
add
our own improvisations. In addition, the trio plays ballads and art
songs
composed by John Alexander.
We thank you for the opportunity to share our love of jazz
music with you.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE BALTIMORE JAZZ TRIO:
“The Trio’s Concert was a quiet interlude. Your compositions were
executed with sensitivity and finesse. The audience was literally
breathless. It was a lovely hour.”
JoAnnMattson, Alumni Director
St. John’s College, Annapolis
“The Baltimore Jazz Trio’s presence greatly enhanced the tone of
our recent reception. We were particularly pleased with the Trio’s
musicianship and ability to intrigue but not overwhelm our guests.”

“John Alexander and The Baltimore Jazz Trio combine charm and
musicianship to bring new meaning to our jazz traditions. They bring
old songs to
life and add original compositions. We are delighted to have them with
us.”
Victor Ganderson, Proprietor

“Your Trio’s performance at our Fall Concert was a high point of
the season. The Trio combined a fascinating review of jazz with warmth

THE MUSICIANS
John Alexander, piano and vocal, played repertory
jazz with Baltimore’s Southland Trio during the 1950’s. Later, he
chose another profession and his musical pursuits focused on study and
composition. He is a student of earlier jazz music. He
also composes ballads and art songs that evolve from his interest in
jazz and the blues.
Gary Kerner, string bass, brings a long musical
career to the trio. He studied bass at Towson University and was
bassist with the Hank Levy Towson University Big Band. He
has performed with the Baltimore City Municipal Big Band since 1971.
He performs regularly throughout the Baltimore area.
Phillip Butts, drums, is a dedicated musician with
broad professional experience. He has been Director of Instrumental
Music at Anne Arundel High School for 30 years. For a number of years
he has been involved with extended jazz programs for High School
Students throughout the State. His professional and educational
attainments have earned him the title "Jazz Genie."
